WaterTower Theatre, Jan-Feb 2007
This production has really been a dream for me. About four or five years ago I remember seeing a casting breakdown for Humble Boy for an open audition. I noticed the role of Felix. He was described as: Overweight but not unattractive, British, witty, intelligent. I made a mental note. We moved to Waco in July to begin our new jobs at Baylor University. I started looking at what the Dallas theatres were doing and saw Humble Boy. I got an audition time and ordered the play online. I knew that it was a loose modern adaptation of Hamlet and that Felix was the "Hamlet" character. I figured it might be the closest to Hamlet I'd ever get so I was excited about the audition. While all of this was happening, my father was dying. He died in October, and a few weeks later (maybe two) I went and auditioned for this play, still stunned with my own grief, unsure if this was the play I should be trying for. I got the part, unsure if this was the play I should be doing. It's been very thereputic and very challenging, but mostly it's been the most fun I've had on stage in a long long time, thanks to a great cast, director, and theatre. Thanks to a great play. And thanks mostly to my father. Click on a thumbnail for a bigger version.
